TAXI INSTRUCTIONS:
Remember to take authorized taxis only (the ones bearing on their top the sign TAXI); usually they are white with a yellow, chequered pattern in a single stripe on the sides.
Prices usually vary depending on day and daytime (on Sundays, public holidays and during the night prices are a bit higher), on the number of people, and on the luggage. Usually an extra charge is applied according to the number of bags you are carrying.
GUIDED TOURS:
Guided tours always include the cost of the guide, while museum tickets and possible taxi rides are at your expense. Usually the average cost of a museum ticket (like the Uffizi Gallery) is about € 6.20, approximately $ 7.00 USD, but the price may vary depending on the museum you visit.
CAR RENTAL INFORMATION
The pick-up time is the one shown on your voucher. Should you be running late, remember that the car rental office will be able to wait for you and keep your rented car available just for one more hour beyond the time of the voucher; otherwise, the agency is authorized to consider the car available for other possible customers.
Just in case of any emergency or problem you may encounter with your rented car, please contact the car rental office at the telephone number supplied on the voucher. If your attempts to contact them are unsuccessful, contact the car rental office in the city airport or ask the concierge of your hotel for help.
Most shops, offices and petrol stations are closed on Sundays; therefore, if you need to fill up, we suggest you do it on weekdays or Saturdays. Self-service pumps are available at some stations, but the directions for using them are usually only in Italian.
MAPS FOR ITINERARIES
In order to travel by car independently in Italy, we suggest you buy a Michelin road map and guide for Italy. We do not furnish you with anything but a general orientation map. Michelin maps have state roads, country roads and highways clearly listed, they are the best. You can purchase one for less than $5 either at a big bookstore at home or when you arrive in Italy.
Navigation in Italy is quite different from the US. In Italy, in order to get from one town to another you have to follow the names of the towns in between on the map and look for signs pointing to the intermediate towns along the way. Often the road numbers are not indicated.
Autostrada means Highway and are indicated in GREEN
SS or Superstrada are state roads and are indicated in BLUE (longer but more panoramic)
DRIVING THROUGH THE COUNTRYSIDE
Try to avoid the motorway as much as you can, taking the SS (Strada Statale) roads, which are more relaxing and therefore enable you to better enjoy the European countryside.
