Special Features of this Magnificent Basilica in Venice
No words can describe this unforgettable setting in the heart of Venice. The Crypt is where the body of St. Mark was placed with great solemnity in 1094. It has intersecting vaults and niches, hollowed out of the surrounding walls, supported by low columns of Greek marble and Byzantine capitals. The Altar has a marble relief: "Virgin and Child with Saints Peter, Mark, Catherine and Ursula" (1494), an ancient altar-piece of the Confraternity "Mascoli", which had its seat here from 1222 till the end of the 16th Century. Behind the Altar is where the bones of St. Mark are placed under the table of the High Altar.
