Unique characteristics of this 13th Century Church in San Gimignano
The construction of this Tuscan church with its slender bell tower began in 1280 and was completed eighteen years later.
While the exterior has the simple lines of the Romanesque style structures, the decoration dates to the Renaissance time, when well known artists enriched the interior with frescoes and paintings.
The altar piece is by Piero del del Pollaiolo, brother of the famous Antonio, important frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli adorn the main chapel.
Of special interest is a secondary chapel with a marble monument sculpted by Benedetto da Maiano with terracotta floor by Andrea della Robbia. Fragments of frescoes by Bartolo di Fredi complete the atmosphere.
The church’s main door is not used as an entrance, but on the right hand side of the structure there’s another door that serves this purpose.
The beautiful Renaissance style cloister was built during the second half of the 15th century. A well stands in the middle of it.
Getting married in San Gimignano, the quintessential Tuscan medieval town, and in this unique church is the perfect choice for an unforgettable Catholic wedding ceremony!
