Destination Weddings in Varenna
Varenna is considered to be the most picturesque town on Lake Como, with winding alleys, charming homes often adorned with frescoes and coat of arms, and balconies filled with flowers.
This small mid-lake fishing village, called la perla del Lago di Como (Lake Como's pearl), has 860 permanent residents, a small town square that contains an 11th century Romanesque church and a parish church dating from the thirteen hundreds! A few street cafes that are situated along the tree-lined streets create a very cozy atmosphere.
The lakefront promenade, called la Passarella, connects the town centre with the ferry boat harbor and it is one of the most romantic walks ever! Flowers, villas, boats and a calm, sweet waterscape will take your breath away.
Just above Varenna is the ancient castle where Theodolinda, Queen of the Lombards, is said to have died in the 7th century.
Varenna, located halfway down the eastern shore of the lake on the Lecco branch, and a boat stop from Bellagio, is a little town that originated in Roman époque and still hints of its past history.
The original Roman layout of the town is still evidenced in the present geometric design that permit breathtaking views of the lake.
Now one of the most popular locations for holiday and tourism, the town was built on a rock at the foot of mount San Defendente. From the quarries of this mountain a splendid black, and also a black and white marble was extracted in the past making the town an important centre for marble work.
There are two renowned villas to visit: Villa Cipressi, with gardens and terraces flowing down to the shores, and Villa Monastero, a spectacular sight.
The lake side town also has an interesting bird museum that features a variety of local species.
Near Varenna is the shortest river in Italy and one with most enticing name: Fiumelatte (River of Milk). Leonardo da Vinci is believed to have been puzzled by the river, as he and others failed to find its source. It runs for only 250 metres, six months a year, from April to September. During the time when it is active, it throws itself into the lake with a foamy white rush, hence its "milky" appearance.
