Unique characteristics of Saint Peter’s Basilica

 

The world’s largest church in the world’s smallest country!

Saint Peter’s Basilica measures 21,477 square meters and was designed by Italy’s greatest artists and architects among which : Michelangelo, Bramante, Bernini and Raphael. The cupola was designed by Michelangelo. It took centuries to complete!

The water pouring forth from the fountains on the main piazza comes from beautiful Lake Bracciano through an aqueduct build during the 1600’s by Pope Paul V.

The obelisk came from Egypt and was brought by Emperor Caligula. Apparently it is the only obelisk in Rome that did not fall during the Middle Ages. Originally it was placed in the Circus of Caligula and Nero and was then re-erected on 10th September 1586 in St. Peter’s square. It took 900 men and 50 horses to raise the obelisk and re-set it in place!

The main altar where the Pope celebrates mass is in front, at the end of the Basilica; many other smaller chapels are laid out on both sides and in one of these, weddings are celebrated in complete privacy. The wedding chapel is accessed through a magnificent wrought iron gate with gilding which is then closed off for ceremonies with a heavy velvet curtain. Inside the décor is elegant wood paneling, frescoes and gilding.
