Special Features of this Roman Wedding Location & Hotel
The most beautiful terrace is on the rooftop of this Roman hotel. There is no other place where you will be able to see the dome of the Pantheon in such great detail and close up. Looking across from the terrace is like reading a book on the history of European architecture, with plenty of famous landmarks to marvel at. You can view many monuments of the Eternal City, to the right and left of the terrace, clearly outlined against the Roman sky, like the cupola of S. Ivo, built in 1642 by Borromini and the roof-terrace of the Quirinale. And if you look down over the piazza outside the hotel, your attention will be caught by the great sculptor Bernini’s most curious work: an elephant supporting an obelisk.
The Hotel was initially built in 1620 for the Fonseca family, aristocrats of Portuguese origin who later became Roman. During the French Revolution of 1789, Princess Massimo, widow of Duke Federico Cesi, took refuge for a short period in this place, which has been a hotel since the end of the 18th century.
The Hotel has always been a favoured venue of travellers to Rome because of its proximity to the Pantheon and the Parliament "palazzi" and its location in the heart of the city. Over the centuries, many artists, wealthy aristocrats, high-ranking ecclesiastics and intellectuals chose to stay here. The hotel’s memories include the sojourns of Stendhal and George Sand, as well as some extraordinary visits, such as when Pope Pius IX came to meet Cardinal Aguirre, Bishop of Guayquir. Given the affluence of high-ranking prelates, the hotel was provided with a chapel where priests could say the Holy Mass. In 1891, a winter garden was built in the hotels' inner courtyard.
Today, the garden has been transformed into an elegant hall with a crystal ceiling reflecting every last ray of sunlight. The hall is dominated by a statue of the Roman goddess of wisdom and war, framed by ancient columns. Here, the tradition of musical afternoon teas has been maintained and the music today is played by a harpist.
