Special Features
In the seventh century a monastery was erected here and in the 12th century a church with one of the most spectacular staircases (122 stairs!!) and panoramic views over all of Rome. Attached to the church is the Capitoline Hill which overlooks the Roman Forum. The piazza designed by Michelangelo with the Senatorial Palace on each side is superlative in design and views. Wedding photos here are simply incredible, particularly in black and white. The center of the Capitoline square bears the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius.
The church's door is surmounted by a beautiful mosaic of the Madonna and Child.
The inside is awe-inspiring with mosaics, gilding and a huge nave with columns. For small wedding parties one of the many altars and chapels could be used. Superb frescoes by Pinturicchio and Cavallini and Gozzoli decorate the interior. The ceiling dates from the 1500's and the floor is very particular. There are sculptures by Donatello and other great masters.
This is one of the most choreographic churches in Rome.
