In the region of Campania, the cities that are called 'torre' are those that have had high watchtowers overlooking the ocean. These were installed in order to warn the residents of the arrival of pirates. Torre Annunziata, located in the region of Campania, is a well-regarded example. A wedding that takes place in this area is undoubtedly laced with much symbolism and historic imagery.
Torre Annunziata has been celebrated since the Roman times for its baths; those of Vesuviane Nunziante were built on the ruins of a Roman establishment. The city lies between Vesuvius and the sea of the Bay of Naples. It is near the Sorrento coastline, and enjoys Capri, Ischia and Procida within sight. Pompei is its direct neighbor.
The city has a royal arms factory that was established by Charles IV, and a large pasta manufacturing industry. The production of paper goods, as well as some fishing and shipping commerce, takes place in the region as well. Remnants attributed to the Roman post-station of Oplontis were discovered during the construction of the railway between Torre del Greco and Torre Annunziata in 1842. The Basilica Pontificia minore is a beautiful cathedral located in Torre Annunziata. The city’s patron saint, Maria SS. della Neve is commemorated there.
When Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it destroyed the two Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and all the areas in between. These devastated areas have been increasingly restored as of the mid 18th century, and they are made available to the public. Descriptive wall paintings of the Villa Oplontis at Torre Annunziata depict the lavish life-style of the elite populace of the early Roman Empire.
A marriage ceremony in Torre Annunziata would meld the times past of this region into the backdrop of a splendid coastal landscape.
