The church was first built in the thirteen century on the ruins of an ancient fortress in a picturesque, prominent position facing the sea.
The people of Atrani thought that their protector Saint had liberated the town from the Saracen invaders, King Manfred’s mercenaries; to thank her, they built this Basilica.
During the month of July the people of Atrani still honor their Saint with a special procession.
Cooking traditional food is part of the celebration.
